Title: Spike Energy™ - It's Not Just Mechanical Anymore

Subtitle: Detecting Loose Rotor Bars in a 50 HP Chilled Water Pump Motor Using Spike Energy™

Spike Energy™ Filter

Abstract: Spike Energy™ has long been regarded as a valuable tool used for detecting bearing and gear defects, cavitation, and rubbing. But, it has been neglected when considering its ability to assist with electrical fault diagnosis. Because it has the capability to demodulate the sidebands associated with high frequency carriers, faults associated with the rotor bar assembly in ac induction motors can be detected. A case study supporting this idea is presented at the end of the article. (read more)

Abstract: The use of model testing techniques and FEA together to solve vibration problems is a powerful technique. In the case presented, the deck structure of an I. D. fan was redesigned in order to avoid an unacceptable resonant condition. An FEA model was validated using an ODS. It was then employed to test various design configurations. A design was selected that the FEA model predicted would succeed and that was feasible from both cost and implementation perspectives. (read more)

An overhung fan at a chemical plant that sits five stories up on a mezzanine was shaking the whole tower structure. The initial investigation was undertaken because the customer felt that excessive vibration of the fan was not only hard on the fan assembly but also detrimental to the integrity of the structure.
